South Florida businesses have banded together to promote next Saturday as "Small Business Saturday." The aim is to encourage holiday shoppers to stop by locally owned businesses before they visit Walmart, Target, Best Buy and the like.
"I think it's important to remind people of that small and local businesses are around them, to support the local economy," noted the owner of a small Ft. Lauderdale jewelry store.
It's an interesting approach to boosting business and, we think, a good example of how small business owners use savvy and ingenuity to stay a step ahead of their big-box brethren. One of the reasons we like working with the owners of small businesses and new companies is that more often than not, these people are bright, ambitious and creative, and we find them very energizing.
Many stores, such as a Hallandale Beach salon, are offering discounts to entice customers. Others are having giveaways, special promotions or opening early to fan the excitement.
The National Federation of Independent Businesses estimates that businesses that participate in National Small Business Day see an 80 percent boost in sales. About 46 percent of member business said they are planning to incorporate National Small Business Day into their yearly promotions and marketing in some way.
As we mentioned, we know that the owners of small businesses and startup companies often have to use creative thinking and strategy to get ahead in business. When you don't have a long history or well-padded bank accounts to fall back on, you have to stay lean, hungry and ready. We like that about our clients.
