A group that has charged itself with promoting Florida's job and economic growth unveiled a new logo recently and some people are very unhappy with it.
Because we know that efforts to nurture Florida's economic climate are important to many our clients, we thought this was an issue worth taking a look at.
Enterprise Florida's new image is the word "Florida" with a stylized necktie replacing the "I." (See the new logo here.) The concern that some people have raised is that the logo is sexist, since only men traditionally wear ties.
With 587,000 female-owned businesses, Florida is fourth in the nation for economic enterprises led by women. That means we have done well as a state in encouraging women to participate fully in the business world. It also means that we have a significant woman-owned business sector that we must listen to.
At the moment, it seems that while some think the logo is sexist, others think such a view amounts to an overreaction. So, it certainly is not as though Floridians are speaking in a unified chorus.
For now, Enterprise Florida is not entertaining plans of changing the logo. Its chief marketing officer (who is a woman) told ABC News that "there is nothing sinister here. There's no secret formula for how it was approached."
"If you see a tie, you think business," she added.
