Any time a new business relocates to Central Florida, it's a good thing. New businesses in our area mean more jobs for residents, more occupied commercial real estate to boost our tax receipts and more intelligence and business savvy for our business community (it's the opposite of a brain drain, if you will.)
National Air Cargo, a cargo airline that is currently based in Orchard Park, New York, is looking at relocating its corporate headquarters to Orlando. It is looking at a location on Millenial Park Drive and would bring local jobs that pay over $61,000 (it has not announced how many such jobs would be generated by the move).
The relocation isn't a done deal yet -- the company might expand an existing location in Ypsilanti, Mich., and is also looking at Huntsville, Alabama and Detroit -- but government officials are doing their best to lure the airline here.
State and local governments have cooperated to offer up and incentive package worth about $960,000. The city of Orlando recently approved its 20 percent share and the Orange County Commission agreed to kick in $63,000.
Now, some people disagree with state and local governments using economic incentives to attract businesses. After all, in a certain light, it can be seen as spending money to induce a private business to decide an issue a certain way, and some people think that money should be spent on things that more directly benefit citizens. Others, however, make the point that we all do better when businesses come to our area. Do you have any thoughts on this issue? It is certainly one on which reasonable business minds can disagree.
